Help wearing Vintage

this might sound silly, but I need some advice on wearing vintage. I've gone to a couple of shops, and saw things that look great on other people. But any time I try to wear vintage I look like a bag lady. Suggestions on how to look good not sad?

that was helpful, thanks! I think you are right, I was trying to use vintage as more of a stand-alone type of look instead of breaking it up with something designer or very contemporary. Good Advice, and I love your site!

hey Carolyn! One thing that helped me was to start focusing on vintage that I would wear if it were just released.
Take a peasant skirt for example. I wouldn't wear that even though flower prints are big now. But I do love mod inspired pieces so I look for mod-style vintage pieces.
Same goes for very classic. If you are an Ann Taylor lover, look to the 50s classic style vintage ala Grace Kelly.
Basically, stick to the vintage era that defines your look today. I promise you'll feel much more comfortable.

Vintage accessories are the BEST!! They completely transform an outfit from something on a mannequin in a shop to something original. Keep playing around with vintage Carolyn, don't give up. You'll start really creating your own looks and style.

Hey Carolyn! I think the art to wearing vintage is mixing the vintage piece with a contemporary/on trend or designer piece. If I wear a vintage dress for example I have to style it with a waist belt as I find the length of the dresses quite long so it breaks it up. I am a founder of Kindred Sole and we have a Vintage shoe collection - if a customer asks for similar advice we always say make the vintage shoe/piece the focal point...its a recognition of fab fashion times gone by after all!!
